This oven baked 4-ingredient chicken Devonshire is the kind of old-fashioned comfort food that earns a permanent spot in the family recipe box. With tender chicken, savory ham, a creamy sauce, and a browned cheese topping, it feels special enough for holidays but easy enough for a busy weeknight when you still want something homemade. Recipes like this became popular in the 1960s and 1970s for good reason: they turn a handful of simple ingredients into a rich, cozy casserole that brings everybody to the table fast.

Serve this with buttery rice, egg noodles, or mashed potatoes to soak up the creamy sauce. For something lighter, add steamed green beans, roasted broccoli, or a crisp salad with a tart vinaigrette to balance the richness. Warm dinner rolls also fit right in if you are leaning into the holiday-supper feel.

Variations & Tips

Use rotisserie chicken: This is one of my favorite shortcuts on a busy night. Just shred the meat and layer it right into the dish. It saves time and still gives you that comforting baked-from-scratch feel.

Change the cheese: Sharp cheddar gives the casserole that classic flavor, but Swiss cheese is also delicious here and leans even more into the old-school chicken Devonshire style. A half-and-half blend works nicely too.

Add a little texture: If you do not mind stepping beyond the original 4 ingredients, a light sprinkle of buttered breadcrumbs over the cheese adds a nice crisp top. It is especially good if you are serving this for a holiday meal.

Do not overbake: Since the chicken is already cooked, the goal is simply to heat everything through and brown the cheese a bit. Pull it from the oven as soon as it is bubbling so the chicken stays tender.

Make-ahead tip: Assemble the casserole a few hours ahead, cover, and refrigerate. When you are ready to bake, let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes first so it heats more evenly in the oven.
